	ImmersED: exploring education in the metaverse This Moodle site supports our island for educators built using the OpenSim opensource virtual worlds platform and hosted on Reaction Grid, a virtual worlds host dedicated to a safe, PG environment for education and business. 1	Get started - Create an account > set up a 3D browser > log into ReactionGrid > Log into ImmersED HQ To get the most out of this environment, you will need a late model computer with a good quality graphics card (see Second Life system requirements) and a broadband internet connection. If you are trying to access the environment from behind a government or corporate firewall, you may need to discuss access with your network administrator. Set up your account on Reaction Grid Resource Download the Hippo OpenSim viewer Resource Mac users - you'll need to download the Second Life viewer, then follow instructions on Reaction Grid site to get it to load OpenSim on Reaction Grid. Do NOT download Second Life Viewer 2 for use on ReactionGrid - stick with the most recent version of the standard viewer. Make Reaction Grid your default grid - Hippo viewer only (MP4 25 MB 03:13) file NOTE: The name of our estate has changed from Education.au to ImmersED Estate. 2	The welcome centre - overview and tutorials Make the Welcome Centre your island starting point. On the Ground floor, you'll find overview information and teleport disks to every part of the island. The n00bies are on the first floor provides in-world tutorials on the basics of navigation, communication, interacting with objects, dressing your avatar and inventory management.Or, start by viewing the tutorials here first, then visit the n00bies area and put your skills to the test and score some great freebies to get your OpenSim adventures off to a great start! 6 must-have OpenSim skills There are plenty of skills you'll pick up during your in-world adventures and plenty of these will come in handy. Get these 6 down pat and future skills will come much more easily. 1. Turn on the sun if it's dark 2. Walking 3. Talking 4. Teleporting 5. Interacting with objects 6. Retrieving items from inventory Skills Wikis Help each other - if you can expand on any of the skills areas, please join in. To create a new page off an existing page type a page name and enclose it in square brackets [ ] Save, then re-open the parent page. A ? will appear next to the page name. Click on the question mark and you'll be taken to the new page. Add content, save and the page name on the parent page will become a link. To add a photo, upload one to a web site, then copy the image location and enclose it in square brackets. Please make sure images are no more than 500 pixels wide. 3	The Resource Centre - research, feedback and freebies The resource centre provides overviews and links to research relating to learning theories and pedagogies relevant to the use of virtual worlds in education and training. Those resources are also available here. On the first level, you'll find freebies and in the near future links to OpenSim educational destinations as well as case study overviews of the use of virtual worlds in education. We will also make those case studies available on this site. 4	Watch: Immersive Learning: It's Game On! A video overview of the use of virtual worlds and immersive games in education and training.

5	Activities - team up with a colleague and get involved The purpose of the island is to get you hands on with the use of virtual worlds in education. There are currently 4 areas under development or soon to be under development: 3D Safari An active reflection exercise that calls for you to pair up with another avatar to explore educational sims and consider your learning thus far about the use of virtual worlds in education. Job Interview Roleplay Pair up with another avatar and take the role of interviewer or job applicant to experience the use of virtual worlds as a role play tool. 21st Century Learning Space build - COMING SOON We're looking for a few good avatars - teachers and students ages 9 to 16 to create their ideal 21st Century teaching and learning spaces. SLOODLE Slab - COMING SOON This area is slated for development in Autumn 2010. SLOODLE (Simulation Linked Object Oriented Learning Environment) allows interaction between Moodle and virtual worlds like OpenSim and Second Life.

6	Activity 1: 3D Safari - partner with a colleague for exploration and critical thinking Put your higher order thinking skills to work with another avatar! Use this active reflection exercise to explore other educational sims on Reaction Grid and analyse them in terms of what you've learned about the use of immersive environments in education. N00bies session in-world facilitated by Pandora Kurrajong of ImmersED will be conducted in late February in-world with voice streamed via Skype. 7	Activity 2: Job Interview Roleplay - conduct a job interview in-world Experience the role play aspect of virtual worlds first hand as you and another avatar take on the roles of interviewer and job seeker using the materials provided by the myfuture Career Services team. Choose your role then read through the documentation provided here first before setting a time to use the role play area.
