The Death of Fun. SASOSE Uni Student Award Winner for 2009, Elizabeth Donald, designed and produced a very creative response to the issue of discrimination against Jews in Germany between 1933-1945. The Death of Fun is a 4-minute film using Elizabeth's own original charcoal and ink drawings which depict rats and mice, beginning in 1933 when rat children for forbidden to play with mice children. Elizabeth's clever sequencing show how incremental steps follow this ruling. The film ends with the question 'How could this happen'? To view the film go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2TdWjdnZ_s or click on the heading. An excellent resource to use with middle years students.

Moving towards Urban Sustainability is another new Global Education resource for middle and secondary teachers. Cities consume 75% of resources and produce most of the waste. This resource is intended for teachers of middle school students, and teachers of secondary school subjects such as Society and Environment, Geography, Sustainable Futures, Contemporary Issues and Studies of Societies. The focus of the resource is on the way we live in modern cities but the content moves beyond this to examine the environmental impacts of house design, transport, electricity, water and waste. It also addresses the role of community, the importance of city gardens, and the opportunities for individual choice and action.

Microcredit or microfinance is about small loans at affordable interest to poor people to enable them to set up in small business, mostly in developing countries. Loans average $250 and there is an almost 100% rate of repayment. Schools can be involved in making small loans (eg $3 from family) to set up a small class business, the profit from which is reinvested or donated to worthwhile causes.
