'PD for Working with Personal Digital Assistants (PDA)' is an emerging technologies initiative running across all TAFEWA colleges in 2006. Collaborating teams in and between colleges are developing practical innovative teaching, learning and assessment solutions using these mobile technologies. We encourage VET practitioners nationwide to tag along and learn from [follow and interact with] our teams on their learning journey.
Funded by the Western Australian Department of Education and Training (WADET) and supported by WestOne Services, Training Delivery Solutions (TDS) and LearnScope WA, this exciting Professional Development program is an opportunity for TAFEWA VET professionals in the use of Personal Digital Assistants (PDA) to address industry/student/client requirements. This program offers the opportunity for TAFEWA colleges to work together in teams for practical, innovative solutions when using mobile device technologies - PDAs. Individuals will develop new skills with emerging technologies and team based projects will foster a sharing environment. | Workshops following the 2006 Training Forum were very popular - It was great to see so many PDA project members! |

Let's look at PDA's in the Pilbara!
Project brief
The project team agreed to trial the PDAs as an assistant to the lecturer.
MEM7.5A Perform General Machining was selected as a trial CSU. Having large classes and in the main only one lecturer has meant apprentices are constantly waiting for the next step or instruction.
Successes
- Apprentices do find it assists as they can proceed at their own pace.
- Cuts out some of the frustration of waiting.
- Frees up lecturer time which allows for more one to one training.
- Apprentices can give input to improve the presentation therefore having ownership of the project
Issues
- Time consuming designing and putting the training sessions onto the computer/PDA
- This could be done as a contract to an appropriately skilled company or individual. It could also be used as a project for apprentices to sign off the computer skills CSU & assist in the provision of on the job training.
