edna Groups: Community spaces for Australian educators

21st Century Learning

1. Teaching and learning online can be safe and authentic
2. Teaching and learning online is defined inclusive of lifelong learning.

3. Stakeholders defined
- students
- parents
- teachers
- department
- media
- community
- law makers
- global community
- community guardians
- the industry
- geeks

4. Teaching and learning online has the capacity to enhance everybody's life. It opens up a world of new opportunities; risk aversion limits this potential. Advances in teaching and learning online can only occur in a culture/environment which encourage and supports innovation.
- refer to life long learning
- acknowledge that learners come into teaching and learning online at all stages of their development
- before we can have responsibility and accountability we need to have guidance and the support we need to be courageous
- "School is a safe place to get a good look at the enemy" [Philip Adams]
- applications of/to teaching and learning online need to be age appropriate.

5. All stakeholders have a right and a responsibility to contribute to this debate. Widening the definition of "stakeholder" will add vigour and rigour of the debate (eg detractors' views are important).
- the views of detractors are valuable
- encourage involvement and contribution in a "no blame" environment of continuous improvement
- not taking a position is a powerful and potentially destructive position.
- we will find ways of universalising today's conversation so that it enters parallel and related forums where these questions are being addressed.
- as a teacher, contemporary education requires the integration of tools for teaching and learning online

6. Teaching and learning online has inherent risks and threats. These need to be identified, acknowledged and addressed. More Australian research is required to differentiate myths and realities in respect of risks and threats.
- Managing myth is part of risk management
- We can list some myths and and realities
- realities:
* Social disadvantage can be increased by assuming everyone has access to tools for teaching and learning online(reality)
* Tools will be needed to resolve problems with teaching and learning online
* Harassment, sexual harassment and bullying incidents are a risk with teaching and learning online

- myth:
* I can be anonymous online
* All online predators are middle aged paedophiles
* Online predators are strangers
* False online identity will save you from predators
* A clean internet feed is possible or useful

"The best place to install an internet filter is between the ears of the user" [Tom Wood]

7.Teaching and learning online will include a system of shared responsibility and accountability mechanisms (including self moderation at community level).
- The community (common meaning) decides on sanctions for abuse/misuses of tools for teaching and learning online, recognising that many offences are already recognised in criminal law.
- Examples: a 'Charter of Rights and Responsibilities" and "Code of Conduct/Integrity".
- many of the required responsibilities and accountability mechanisms already exist, but need to be re-profiled for better recognition and accessibility. Don't reinvent the wheel.

8. Strategies for ensuring all travellers teaching and learning online are equipped with sufficient and appropriate skills and confidence to proceed safely and ethically in knowledge of the potential consequences of the journey.
