I hope I'm doing the right thing by posting this in its entirety. It is post by Jim Doherty to the Sakai eportfolio list- details of how to join, etc can be found at the base of the email. I thought it would be of interest to you all, especially those interested in interoperability.
My understanding is that the OSP tool in sakai is an open source eportfolio tool- that has great potential to allow it to be modified and created in the way individual users and institutions want- but that it is definitely not an out of the box solution so one needs a friendly developer and some tech savvy to get it working. The Netherlands is also worth watching for their big picture framework linking eportfolios to employment, skills, industry, hence the addition of HR interoperability standards.

The IMS ePortfolio specification was created to make ePortfolios
interoperable across different systems and institutions. Portfolio4u, a
Sakai commercial partner in the Netherlands, has been examining this
standard for some time. Starting in December 2007, we sponsored a
development effort to make the e-portfolio import/export available in
OSP/Sakai. With some financial support from Kennisnet Nederland (a Dutch
semi-governmental IT in Education support organization) and with the
programming talents of Edia, developers for Sakai based in Amsterdam,
*an* *e-portfolio
implementation in Sakai has now been realized!*

Last week, we participated in a 'Plug Fest' with 8 other vendors of
e-portfolio and CMS software available in the Netherlands. During the Plug
Fest, the newly developed tool successfully imported 6 of 7 'random' input
files, (now he does 7/7! ), changes were successfully made in the
portfolios, and good exports following the standard were then also
achieved.

The UI is designed to give 'full control' over what is imported and
exported. (see attached screenshot for an idea of how a student selects
desired items within the 'Portfolio Parts' before import) .. The tool is
currently implemented in Dutch, so you'll have to use a bit of
imagination to 'interpret' the screenshot.

*During the Tech Demos at the upcoming Paris Sakai conference, Portfolio4u
and Edia will demonstrate the software to anyone interested. Thereafter, we
will make the code available in 'Contrib'.*

In September 2008, we will be testing the e-portfolio import/export with
'real users' at a community college in Rotterdam. Students will be
exporting their portfolios for later import by a significant local
employer. So we aim to use this functionality to allow students to pass
information about themselves and their qualifications to the job market.

eportfolios - content

So far in our discussions on eportfolios we have not yet considered the content within them!

What would you include in your eportfolio?

How would the content of eportfolios differ for these people?

10 year old in primary school
15 year old in secondary school
20 year old in tertiary education
25-40 year old employee (e.g. teacher in VET)
45-60 year old resident of a community (e.g. a family member)

What else would influence the content of your learners' eportfolios?

What do I include in my eportfolio?

Right now I'm tidying up the content of my eportfolios! I am following no. 5 of the ideas suggested by Stephen Downes in his recent 'Ten Wb 2.0 Things to do in Ten Minutes' article at Elearn Magazine. I will provide a link to my eport exemplars if you are interested.

and thanks for the link to Helen Barrett's eportfolio a nice example anyone can follow. You might also be interested in the S3 storage available via amazon.( although it appears not to be available to aussies. Does anyone in the asian pacific region know about our access?
